Nine holes with our sons. Then a villa, and a real conversation.

Six fathers and six grown sons. We tee off at noon, play nine with caddies, and head back to a villa above the coast for food and a few hours of trading stories and the kind of advice we'd want our sons to actually hear. About six hours, and you're welcome to stay as long as you like.

The idea

Good conversations with our grown sons mostly happen by accident.

This one is set up on purpose. Golf gives us a few unhurried hours together, and the villa afterward gives us somewhere to sit down and talk without anyone checking the time.

The part I think makes it work is the group. A father can say something to another man's son that lands differently than it would from his own — and a son will take advice from someone else's dad that he'd wave off from his. Six pairs in one room means every son leaves with more than just his father's perspective.

I'll guide the conversation and keep it moving. Nothing you need to prepare.

The day

How Sunday runs.

11:30 Arrive Check in, meet the group, hit a few balls if you want to loosen up.
12:00 Tee off Nine holes, three foursomes, caddies on the bags.
2:45 Back to the villa A short ride from the course. Food and drinks are set out and waiting.
3:15 The stories Everyone in one room. We go around — what we've learned, what we'd tell these young men, what they'd tell us. I'll start.
5:30 Open end The formal part wraps. Stay as long as you like — most of the good stuff happens after.

Why I'm doing this

I didn't want to wait for the right moment with Casey.

When my father was at the end, it became obvious how much I'd left unsaid with him — not because anything was wrong between us, but because we were busy and assumed there'd be time.

My son Casey and I are one of the six pairs. I'm not running this from the side; I'm in it, and I'll answer the same questions I ask.

This is the first one. If it goes the way I think it will, there'll be a golf day and a full weekend after it.
